AbstractAttempts to map the coffee crop based on remote sensing satellite images have been reported since the launch of Landsat-1 Visual image interpretation have benefit from technical improvements in both digital image processing such as image resampling and Geographic Information Systems such as raster editing which have significantly contributed to increase mapping classification. However, coffee crop is often cultivated in regions where it is not trivial to identify coffee fields on medium spatial resolution images such as Landsat-TM. Therefore, in the present research high spatial resolution images, available at the Google Earth site, were used to obtain a base map of coffee crop in three municipalities in the Southwestern region of Minas Gerais State. This base map was later updated with coffee crop areas information obtained from TM/Landsat 5 images, taken in 2010. The objective was to evaluate the coffee crop mapping improvement using the stitch map software to extract images from the Google Earth site with afterward registration to the Geocover image from NASA. Results showed that the coffee map based on Google Earth images could be easily updated with a recent Landsat-TM image from 5 July 2010. Moreover, a significant improvement in the spatial mapping quality of the coffee crop fields was observed.
